Bob O’Marley would be proud

A Canadian company is hoping to sell cannabis beer in Ireland sometime next year, reported various news agencies.

Province Brands in Canada has developed a drink by infusing compounds from the cannabis plant into non-alcoholic beer. Drinks sold in Ireland would contain CBD, while in Canada they would also contain THC, which is currently illegal in Ireland and many other European countries.

THC is the component in cannabis which gives users the feeling of being high.

Niall Phelan co-founder of Rye River Brewing and now chief operating officer with Province Brands, said the goal is to brew “healthy non-alcoholic products”.

Phelan said that while alcohol has negative health connotations, research suggests that CBD has a number of positive benefits.

Niall hopes the product could ultimately act as an alcohol replacement: “If we could get to a place where we could replace alcohol consumption, that would be an amazing place to be.”

TBJ will be following this and attempts to market CBD beer in the UK closely. So far, the use of CBD seems more hype than something based on concrete research.
