Munich’s 186th Oktoberfest beer festival has kicked off and German organisers are expecting a massive record breaking 6 million beer lovers to attend.
This last Saturday the event kicked off when Munich mayor Dieter Reiter inserted the tap into the first keg with two blows of a hammer and shouted: “O’zapt it” – it’s tapped.
According to Global Times, Oktoberfest’s origin dates back to 1810 with the wedding of the Bavarian royal family. In 1819, it became an event in the city of Munich. It is now one of the world’s largest folk festivals and is spread across 34.5 hectares of land. There are nearly 13,000 people employed to cater to an event of this magnitude.
This year the festival is running from 21 September to 6 October.
