Brewery in BC Supports Woman in the Industry with Special Batch of Beer

Located in North Vancouver, BC, Black Kettle Brewing Co. is supporting women joining the brewing industry with a special hop brew blend with a portion of proceeds going towards scholarships to female brewers.

Brewmaster Sarah Polkinghorne wants to see more women in the industry and is working on a brew where every dollar for every pint sold will go to The Pink Boots Society offering scholarships to female brewers.

The collaboration is held in the month of March to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Polkinghorne, a former chemist, got her beer started on March 21 and it should be ready for consumption in about three weeks.

“The scientist in me really enjoyed it,” she said about her early experiences brewing.

Women are under-represented in the craft beer game. According to a 2019 employee report by the American-based Brewers Association, about 7.5 percent of the staff of reporting breweries employed a female in the brewer role. That number increases to a whopping 37 percent of women in non-production roles as the majority are hired as service staff, accounting for 54 percent of those positions.
