Malt barley variety hasn’t been welcomed with open arms, but new additions are starting to turn heads and some people are getting excited at the varieties.
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre (CMBTC) Manitoba Malt Barley Field Day was held at Elder Farm near Wawanesa, Manitoba. The varieties were showcased in glasses that showed the golden yellow colour and were only lightly hopped, to better gauge the quality of malt. Both were brewed under identical conditions. Only the variety was different. One was brewed based on the old industry standby, AC Metcalfe. The other a brand new variety.
Attendees compared smell, colour and taste between the two.. The general consensus, however, described the two as comparable.
