Believe it or not, in the 1800s in Toronto, there was a man who started the brewing phenomenon. A man named Robert Henderson began serving English bitter to the British redcoats and civilians. Clearly, he had a very loyal customer based since, at the time, he was the only brewmaster in town.
Many years later, Henderson’s namesake brewery caters to a very different kind of clientele. Located in the city’s west end, Henderson Brewing Company offers a plethora of beer options alongside and a monthly Ides series of small batch beers.
Steve Himel, Henderson’s general manager, who once entertained joining the clergy, spent 25 years in the marketing and consumer consulting world before realizing the first job he held after high school as a brewer at the Don Valley Brewing. In 2015, he co-founded Henderson Brewing Company, and is now firmly entrenched in Toronto’s independent beer scene.
