New data from technology company Square found that Nova Scotia has the most affordable beer in the nation, with an average cost of $5.77. Conversely, citizens of Quebec face the highest beer costs at a whopping $9.14 per drink. Nationally, the average cost of a beer is $7.76, up from $7.66 a year ago, +1.39%, year over year.
Here are a few other interesting data points from millions of sales transactions from tens of thousands of bars, restaurants, breweries and retailers using Square’s tools and services across Canada:
- July is the most popular month for beer sales, with 13% of all annual beer sales made in July
- 42% of all beer sales are made between the months of May and August
- Beer sales by Square sellers in Canada are up 350% from 2019
- As of the end of 2022, there were 29,621 beer sellers on the Square platform, up 52.8% from 2019
“The number of businesses selling beer on our platform is up almost 53% year over year, which includes bars, restaurants, breweries and approved retailers in Canada. These sellers – who have been looking for innovative ways to diversify their revenue streams in recent years – coupled with stiffer competition, may be helping keep beer prices relatively stable as a result,” said Ara Kharazian, Economist and Research & Data Lead at Square.
