The 2023 Canada Beer Cup Awards Ceremony took place last week in Niagara Falls, Ontario, in connection with the Ontario Craft Brewers Conference.
The Canada Beer Cup is a nationwide competition honouring independently run breweries around the country. From coast to coast, it highlights the excellence and creativity of craft beer. Inspired by global trends that mirror brewing breakthroughs and consumer preferences, the competition showcases 66 distinct updated beer Style groupings throughout 11 Categories. This year’s competition has introduced an additional “Canadian Grain-Forward Beer” category, which highlights the Canadian grain used in its production, in honour of the distinctly Canadian ethos of craft brewing.
A team of 41 judges led by Chief Judge Stephen Beaumont, one of the country’s leading specialists on beer, was joined by others from Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and throughout Canada, blind tested more than 1200 beers submitted by more than 250 brewers to choose the winners earlier this month.
This year’s competition’s highlights include:
Overall Gold Winner
- Basal Brown, Deadfall Brewing of Prince George, British Columbia
Overall Sliver Winner
- Dwarf Sour Cherry Fruited Saison, Blindman Brewing of Lacombe, Alberta
Overall Bronze Winner
- Loki Lager, Nelson Brewing Company of Nelson, British Columbia
