In 2012, Graham Sherman, a beer producer from Calgary, altered the legislation after learning that his idea to open a craft brewery was not allowed by Alberta’s liquor rules.
Prior to 2013, Alberta would not provide a license to a potential brew house unless it could prove that it could produce 500,000 litres of beer annually.
“It’s tough because you get self-doubt. You get imposter syndrome. I’m just some random guy,” Sherman said. “If nobody could change those laws up until now, why would I be the guy to do it?”
But he did alter it. His brewery, Tool Shed Brewing, can now produce more than two million gallons of beer annually and is frequently ranked among Calgary’s best brewers.
