Legal Cannabis Sales Climb, but Alcohol Sales in N.S. Fall

Nova Scotians bought more legal cannabis last year than the previous year, continuing an upward trend since the drug was legalized nearly six years ago.

The Nova Scotia Liquor Corp., the provincial Crown corporation controlling all sales of liquor and legal recreational cannabis in the province, released its year-end financial results last month, showing cannabis sales increased 8.9% to a total of $121 million, nearly four times as much as in 2019.

Cannabis now accounts for nearly 14% of the NSLC’s overall sales. The number of cannabis transactions increased 12.2%, with an average spending of $37.37 per transaction.

However, this dip is partly due to a 4% decrease in the price per gram. Sales of alcohol from NSLC shelves increased 0.5% to $753.4 million, while volume of alcohol sold decreased 4.2%. The number of transactions for alcohol decreased by 2.3%, but people spent more on each transaction by 3%, bringing it to an average of $39.78 spent per person at the till.
