The Canadian Craft Brewers Association created a new competition for independent craft breweries., called the Canada Beer Cup. Over 40 beer experts from Canada and overseas convened earlier in October to sample more than 1,000 submissions.
The Canada Beer Cup announced Callister Brewing Company’s Wee Laird Wee Heavy Scotch Ale as the ‘Best in Show’, and beat out over 1,000 entries to be crowned king of beers. The beer is a smoky and potent Scotch ale and was announced as the winner during a nationally streamed ceremony, where people could watch at craft brewpubs across Canada.
B.C. breweries won 46 of the 175 honours, which were divided into 10 categories and 70 styles. One distinct style out of the 70 evaluated was Canadian Style Beer, which may be interpreted however it had to somehow honour Canada. This year’s winner was Sugar Shack from Toronto’s Shacklands Brewing.
A recording of the online ceremony can be watch on YouTube, and the complete list of the 2022 Canada Beer Cup winners is available here.
