Four-legged companions may now enjoy a beverage and a snack while soaking up the summer sun at a brewery in Victoria that welcomes pets.
A new dog menu with chicken stew, meatballs, bacon and egg nibbles, as well as $5 non-alcoholic dog beer cans, is only available on the patios of Moon Under Water Brewpub and Distillery on Bay Street.
“We built a patio during COVID, and we’ve been noticing a lot of people coming with their dogs and ordering hamburgers for their dogs. We did some research, found healthy meals for them and brought back the dog beer,” said Clay Potter.
According to Potter, the brewmaster and co-owner of Moon Under Water, the recently launched seasonal menu is “good for a large-size dog.” Dog beer was popular at the brewery, but it was discontinued for a while. The food, on the other hand, is a fresh delight.
“We came out with a dog beer 10 years ago. We were the first brewery in Canada to do a dog beer. It was a big deal back then,” recalled Potter.
“It was before we had a canning line or any way to package it, so we were putting it in little plastic bottles. It was a one-man operation back then at the brewery, so we didn’t have the resources to keep it going.”
Since Moon Under Water now sells pasteurized non-alcoholic beer, consumers may take their purchases home and keep them for as long as they choose.
There are two varieties of dog beers on tap: Beef and Barley Dunkel and Chicken and Peanut Pilsner. There are two patios and plenty of room for dogs at the brewery, and said Potter, the response thus far has been paws-itive.
“We’ve always had a big group of people coming in with their dogs, but now we’re getting calls nonstop from people all over wanting to bring their dogs in,” he continued.
He’s simply advising owners to grab a doggie bag on the way out and to keep their pets well-behaved and leashed.
