Beer honours LGBTQ rights movement

Calgary’s Tool Shed Brewing company has worked with seven other Canadian brewers to create a new brew that tells the story of the LGBTQ rights movement in Canada and the USA.

Protest Pale Ale boasts a painting of Marsha P. Johnson on the can. Marsha P. was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Johnson was one of the prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969.

“It felt like a really powerful time to speak to her legacy,” said Kevin Learning, creator of the Protest Pale Ale. “She’s a huge figure in the queer rights movement and it’s really great that I can share that story with a much broader audience.”

Blindman Brewing, Freehold Brewing, High Line Brewing, Last Best Brewing, Trolley 5 Brewpub, and Yellowhead Brewing all joined Learning and Tool Shed Brewing Company in the collaboration of the beer.
