Microbreweries Continue Growing in Kelowna, BC

British Columbia’s first British brewery, The Welton Brewery is the only one in the province dedicated to UK style brewing. Founded by Simon Welton, a Canadian resident for 15 years, Welton Brewery aims to combine his UK roots with his Canadian experience to create beer that reflects the flavours of his heritage mixed with the local ingredients of his Canadian home.

“So what that means is we use English style ingredients, we use English yeast, we even modify our water to be the same kind of water they would use in Britain,” said Welton.

Welton’s beers are unique for several reasons, one of them is they use nitrous gas instead of CO2, resulting in a beer with a dense head, smaller bubbles and a smoother feel.

Opening a new location in Kelowna’s North end by next month, Walton chose this space near other craft breweries such as Rustic Reel, Vice and Virtue, Jack Knife and Red Bird as incentive for people to visit and try different craft beers, with the area seeing a real chance for growth and several microbreweries to be added to the area.

“It allows people to come to this area and try a lot of different beers,” said Welton. “We hope that people say they’re going to pick three out of the, potentially I think there could be nine here, hopefully, they pick ours as one of those three.”

Some of Welton’s crafty beer include Rhyl Raspberry, Gruit Sour, Chester Best Bitter, Kelsall Coffee Lager, Helsby IPA and his British Warlock Ale – a butterscotch beer that’s flavoured using real Werthers Originals candies.
